Being a Faithful Steward: The Christian's Vocation

Stewardship is the management of resources, including food, money and property. In the
church, this can be specifically related to the care and management of the church’s
resources, through the gifts and talents of members. But it is also about each person’s use
of his or her own gifts.

Because it is rooted in our response to the gifts that God has given to each of us, being a
steward is the main work of the individual Christian and of the church. But how are we to
talk about it and understand it? To begin, it is important to be clear about what being a
steward is NOT.

Being a steward is:
NOT focused on a specific Sunday in the fall
NOT focused on a pledge or other fund raising
NOT one's fair share to the parish annual budget ...
NOT primarily about money
NOT about filling out a pledge card or using envelopes

Being a steward IS a way of life, an attitude; a way of being in the world.

Being a steward means that we live intentionally as caretakers of all that God has provided
us. Being a steward is the life we are called to by our baptism. Every Christian is called to a
life of being a steward. (See pages 304-305 in the Book of Common Prayer.) Through our baptism we enter into a covenant with God where God promises to be with us always and
we promise to respond in faith to God who has given everything we need for our lives – in abundance! That is what it means when we say that being a steward is our primary vocation
as Christians. It is our first calling, from the beginning of our lives as Christians. It is the way
we are called to live our lives as people of faith.
